O
n Girls in ICT Day, the Sygirls had the incredible opportunity to attend a
transformative event hosted at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences
(MUBAS).
The event, organized with support from the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority
(MACRA), was held under the powerful and timely theme: “Girls in ICT for Inclusive
Digital Transformation.”
This experience was more than just a day out it was a window into what is possible when
girls are empowered, encouraged, and given access to opportunities in the world of
technology.
From the moment they stepped into the venue, our Sygirls were immersed in an environment
buzzing with innovation, ideas, and inspiration. They listened attentively to talks from
industry leaders, tech professionals, and fellow students who shared their journeys,
challenges, and triumphs in the ICT field.
One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was witnessing the sheer excitement and
recognition on the girls’ faces during the presentations. Several topics discussed
aligned directly with what they’ve been studying in class, and seeing this real-world
connection sparked a wave of curiosity and confidence. They eagerly asked questions and
shared their thoughts proving that when given the chance, girls can thrive and lead in
tech spaces.
The event reaffirmed our mission at Sygen to expose young girls to practical experiences
and learning opportunities in the digital space. The impact was undeniable the Sygirls
left the event feeling more empowered, motivated, and ready to pursue their interests in
technology with greater determination.
Inclusive digital transformation begins by ensuring that no one is left behind,
especially girls. By participating in events like this, we are not only breaking
barriers but also shaping a future where girls confidently take up space in the tech
world and contribute to building solutions that matter.
We’re incredibly proud of our Sygirls and grateful to MUBAS and MACRA for making this
experience possible.
oday was nothing short of magical as we, the SyGirls, embarked on an unforgettable tour
of the University Innovation Pod (UniPod Malawi) a place where innovation meets
imagination, and where ideas are transformed into tangible creations.
Led by Upile Matululu and Hope Sandra Khasu, our journey through UniPod was not just a
tour. It was an immersion into a world brimming with creativity, invention, and endless
possibilities. From the moment we arrived, the energy was electric. We knew we were
about to witness something special, and UniPod delivered beyond our expectations.
The girls had the opportunity to explore a range of specialized labs, each space
offering a unique glimpse into the future of technology and craftsmanship:
In the Electronics Fabrication Lab, they saw how circuits are designed and developed.
At the Wood Workshop, they witnessed traditional skills blend with modern design,
learning how raw timber becomes beautiful, functional creations.
And in the awe-inspiring CNC Fabrication Space, they got a taste of how digital designs
are brought to life with precision machines—turning concepts into complex structures at
the push of a button.
Every room sparked new questions, every machine brought new fascination. You could see
the excitement in the girls’ eyes—wide with wonder, full of curiosity, and glowing with
the thrill of discovery.
What stood out most was the genuine engagement from the girls. They weren’t just
observing they were participating, asking insightful questions, soaking in knowledge,
and beginning to see how their own ideas could take shape in spaces like these. They
imagined themselves not just as visitors, but as future creators, ngineers, designers,
innovators and builders of the future.
The entire experience was a powerful reminder of the importance of exposure and
mentorship. Seeing successful women like Upile and Hope lead the tour with such passion
and grace gave the girls role models they could identify with. Representation matters,
and yesterday they saw it in action.
As we left UniPod, the girls were buzzing with excitement. Their conversations were
filled with dreams “I want to build something like that!” “I never knew tech could be
this fun!” “I think I could be an inventor one day.” It was clear: this wasn’t just a
field trip. It was a spark, igniting something deep within them.
We are beyond grateful to UniPod Malawi for opening their doors and hearts to us, and to
Upile and Hope for being such inspiring guides. This experience planted seeds of
ambition, creativity, and confidence in our Sygirls—and we can't wait to see how those
seeds grow.
A
t Sygen, we believe that change starts with action, not perfection. You don’t have to
wait for the most advanced tools, the perfect setup, or a world-class facility to make a
difference you just have to start, and that’s exactly what we’ve done.
In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, we proudly launched
the SyGirls Program a bold, transformative initiative designed to train and empower the
next generation of female tech leaders in Malawi and beyond.
The SyGirls Program is more than just a course, it's a movement. A platform that opens
doors for girls who are passionate about technology but may lack the opportunities,
resources, or support to pursue it.
We’re driven by a simple but powerful mission: to equip young girls with digital skills,
nurture their passion for STEM, and position them as future innovators and changemakers
in the tech industry.
To remove barriers to access and ensure that every girl has a fair chance, the program
is completely free of charge. We believe talent is universal, but opportunities are not
so we’re working to close that gap.
While our dream is to reach as many girls as possible, we’ve chosen to limit each cohort
to 10 participants. This ensures personalized training, hands-on learning, and
one-on-one mentorship, creating a safe and supportive environment where every girl is
seen, heard, and empowered to thrive.
We don’t just teach technical skills we instill confidence, leadership, critical
thinking, and a sense of purpose.
These brilliant young minds aren’t simply preparing for the future, they are already
shaping it. With each workshop, each line of code, and each new challenge they conquer,
they’re proving that girls can and will lead in STEM fields.
Whether it's coding, robotics, design thinking, or problem-solving, the SyGirls are
building the foundation for a future where women aren’t just participating in tech
they’re leading it.
